Amazon.com: Pharmacist's Guide to Medicinal Herbs (9781890572136): Arthur M. Presser: Books

This is a great book, especially for skeptics who want to learn about the real science. This book was written by a doctor of western pharmacology who developed an interest in medicinal herbs and preventative medicine. This books offers the best of both worlds as it has sections devoted to the traditional and common uses of medicinal herbs, and then he talks about the science and research and chemical properties of the herbs which should appeal to the more science minded readers.

Its a good book to have on hand if you are interested in using herbal supplements. Its also a good reference guide to have if you are going into medicine yourself. Most Americans use alternative medicine, including herbs. Physicians and nurses should have at least a rudimentary knowledge of the chemical properties of what their patients are using.

I am reading it now. It goes over the history of herbal medicine and pharmacology, including some of the early psuedoscientific principles (I dont believe in the doctrine of signatures. Its too subjective). You get to learn about the history of how the FDA was created and all the laws that lead up to the current state of things. Its fascinating really.
